What is an ex-dividend date?
The ex-dividend date is the cutoff for dividend eligibility. If you buy a stock on or after its ex-date, the upcoming dividend goes to the seller, not to you. The record date, when the company finalises its shareholder register, follows shortly after the ex-date.
Do I get the dividend if I buy on the ex-date?
No. You must own the shares before the ex-date, which in practice means buying at least one trading day earlier. Buying on the ex-date itself is too late: the price typically opens lower by roughly the dividend amount, and the payment belongs to the previous owner.
